Bring in the Clowns

I am really excited about the World Cup, which is coming at a good time for me. Time to learn a new sport. Stopped by the mall on the way from work and picked up a book on soccer fundamentals and a video game, EA’s 2006 FIFA World Cup. Thought I would spend a little time and effort educating myself on the game.

Decided I would sneak a peak at MLBlogs, and, lo and behold, there is a feature on World Cup Soccer! Mad Dog is graciously hosting a site for us, Maddog’s World Cup Reports. And one of the featured bloggers was my good friend, Thomas over at ‘Stros Bro. Couldn’t resist popping in for a peep, considering he keeps needling me that if only I could only write as well as he, I would be as successful at this blogging thing. I admit, I did find an absolute pearl: “Due to my lack of ignorance.. “. I’ve spent a quarter of a century studying Latin, Greek, Shakespeare–you name it–to become a proficient writer, but I could never come up with a gem like that.  I’m envious.

Does it strike anybody else as odd he is opining about a subject which he confesses he has absolutely no knowledge of or interest in? And he makes the feature section of MLBlogs!?

    Hey Michael, Dave, Maddog here,
Thanks for your comments on my new site. about the world cup.

As I have said my aim is to get more people interested in football, and answer any questions, however silly they may seem to them.

So far it has been well received but I’m sure there are folks out there who cannot abide it..

Come and tell me your positive and negative feelings about the competition, or football in general, and I promise, faithfully to answer every comment..

My heartiest congratulations on Pedro getting a win. Really. Not only did the Diamondbacks yield 3 runs in the first inning to start in a hole…again, but BoMel benched Byrnesie because DaVanon got a single when Soler pitched his two-hitter. Big fat hairy deal! Byrnesie walked that game. For all practical purposes the same thing as a single. And neither of them scored. Like I said, the same thing.

Bad Karma when BoMel benches Byrnesie just to give DaVanon a start. I am tired of DaVanon’s starts almost always coming at Byrnesie’s expense, while Gonzo hasn’t homered since April 20th.

Bad Karma, BoMel. Very Bad Karma.

What a Melvin. He really must be insane. Byrnes has been one of the hottest players in the league the last month. What is he thinking?

Good for the good guys, though 8)

What a Melvin. He really must be insane. Byrnes has been one of the hottest players in the league the last month. What is he thinking?

He’s thinking that he would rather have DaVanon as his CF. He is really addicted to the lefty-righty matchup game. Do you know of a lineup more loaded with lefty hitters than AZ? Byrnesie did cool off a little, of course, so did most of the rest of the lineup, and that was all Melvin needed to start the platoon again.

Let me stop here because I am thinking I’ll write an article for my own blog. On the subject.

DaVanon supposedly can play all three outfield positions. And Byrnesie, of course, can play LF. But most often DaVanon replaces Byrnes, even though Gonzo hasn’t hit a homer since April 20th and is hitting 30 points below a cooling off Byrnes.

Byrnes has an excellent record against the SF Giants, yet Melvin benched Byrnesie for 2 of the 4 games they played in April in AZ and one of the 3 in SF. So let’s see what happens here with the next Giants Series.

And, of course, you know what Byrnesie did at Shea. And while 3 BBs are not as sexy as 3 HRs, he got on base. (And he didn’t K. His K/BB ratio is back under 2!)

Michael, as I said I will reply to all questions..
In football the general formation is 4-4-2, That mens the goalkeeper is a given position. 4 defenders, 4 midfielders, and 2 attackers(strikers). Yes there can be formation changes as in a 4-3-3, or a 3-5-3. but in essence it’s all about playing to your strengths.

    Hope that helps..
